You Are Exactly How You See Yourself

You Are Becoming Who You See Yourself Becoming

September 14, 20234 min read

“Become who you are. Do what only you clan do. Be the master and the sculptor of yourself.” - Friedrich Neitzsche

In the sprawling landscape of self-improvement and personal growth, there's a secret that many overlook: our self-perception (how we see ourselves) drives our actions and, ultimately, our destiny. Do you view yourself as someone always facing defeat, or as someone who rises above challenges? The way you perceive and talk to yourself deeply influences the trajectory of your life. I want to dig deeper into some of these self-perceptions that might be holding you back.

1. The Quitter's Dilemma

Ever faced a situation where you’re tempted to give up just when things become a tad difficult? This is the quitter's dilemma. It's a trap, often driven by self-doubt or fear of failure. The truth? Growth happens outside of your comfort zone. Remember, when you quit once, it becomes easier to quit again. Don’t let quitting be your default.

The majority of people are quitters, usually too busy to try harder. The reason the quit is because that is how they see themselves to be, so that is who they are. Oh, they'll come up with some other excuse:

  1. The work is too difficult.

  2. I never get access to the tools or software that I need.

  3. My training was insufficient.

  4. I need to clean out my cat's litter box.

Once someone's made up their mind to quit - any excuse will do. Remember, excuses are the nails used to build a house of failure - Jim Rohn.

My question is - "Have you ever felt like quitting something you know could be life changing?" Did you act on that feeling or did you work through it?

2. Victim Mentality

Are you prone to ask, “Why does this always happen to me?” If this is a recurrent thought, you might be ensnared in the victim mentality trap.

By constantly perceiving yourself as a victim, you inadvertently relinquish control over your life. Real power comes from taking responsibility, not just for your actions, but also for your reactions.

It's time to take control of your life and your future. Envision winning - not just entering the race. Repeat this phrase to yourself 10 time each morning and 10 times each evening:

"I'm a winner and ain't nobody going to steal my dream. I'm not a victim, I'm victorious."

3. Entitlement Mentality

In a world of instant gratification and everyone gets a trophy, it’s easy to feel like the world owes us something. But here's a reality check: it doesn't.

An entitlement mentality can prevent personal growth and foster dissatisfaction. Focus on the reward and recognize, earning your rewards builds character. It's your character that recognizes the value of hard work.

Get out of the Burger King mindset, "I want it now and I want it fixed my way". Contrary to popular belief, you don't always get what you want, and you may have to want for it.

What does the world owe you? If you think the world owes you something - ask yourself what contribution you made to the world that now entitles you to receive payment from the world for your action.

4. Complacency's Silent Stranglehold

Complacency is a silent killer. It sneaks in and stabs you in the heart when we're too comfortable with life so it stalls your progress and potential. You're entrenched in the comfort of your comfort zone.

Challenge yourself. Refuse to get comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

Seek new experiences. Don't be content with just "good enough". Step out of your comfort zone and experience enthusiasm and success.

Do you suffer from complacency? You might not call it that - you might refer to being complacent as simply procrastination.

5. The Haze of a Futureless Vision

Without a clear vision of the future, you'll be like ships without a compass – directionless and prone to drifting. Envision where you want to be. This not only gives direction but also fuels motivation.

Create a dream board, build a list of 100 things you'd like to do if money and time were limitless.

Wipe the haze away from your vision by creating a detailed declaration of your perfect life. Then read it every day.

Closing Thoughts

Remember, you are becoming who you see yourself becoming. Every thought, every action, every decision is shaping your future. Be mindful of the narratives you tell yourself. Transform from being your own harshest critic to your most fervent believer and supporter.
